Cancun ~ The Daylife ~ by Dawnelle Salant - Cancun has a certain reputation for being a manufactured part of Mexico where tourists do nothing more than lie on the white sand beaches all day and hop from one glamorous club to the next at night. This is, for the most part, an accurate picture of the city itself. But what many tourists don’t know is that the area surrounding Mexico’s jewel of the Caribbean is chock full of nature, history, breathtaking scenery and adventure filled day trips that will surprise and delight travelers of all ages. Jan/05

A Museum -- Cancún is not that big on culture, but one option is the Museo de Arte Popular Mexicano (tel. 998/849-7777), on the second floor of the El Embarcadero Marina, Bulevar Kukulkán Km 4. It displays a representative collection of masks, regional folkloric costumes, nativity scenes, religious artifacts, musical instruments, Mexican toys, and gourd art, spread over 1,370 sq. m (14,747 sq. ft.) of exhibition space. Admission is $10 (£5.50), with kids younger than 12 paying half price. The museum is open daily from 11am to 11pm

Bullfights -- Cancún has a small bullring, Plaza de Toros (tel. 998/884-8372; bull@prodigy.net.mx), near the northern (town) end of Bulevar Kukulkán. Bullfights take place every Wednesday at 3:30pm during the winter tourist season. A sport introduced to Mexico by the Spanish viceroys, bullfighting is now as much a part of Mexican culture as tequila. The bullfights usually include four bulls, and the spectacle begins with a folkloric dance exhibition, followed by a performance by the charros (Mexico's sombrero-wearing cowboys). You're not likely to see Mexico's best bullfights in Cancún -- the real stars are in Mexico City. Keep in mind that if you go to a bullfight, you're going to see a bullfight, so stay away if you're an animal lover or you can't bear the sight of blood. Travel agencies in Cancún sell tickets, which cost $40 for adults and are free for children younger than 6; seating is by general admission. American Express, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted

An All-Terrain Tour -- Cancún Mermaid (tel. 998/843-6517; www.cancunmermaid.com) offers all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) jungle tours for $72 (£30) per person or $55 (£30) per person if riding double. The ATV tours travel through the jungles of Cancún and emerge on the beaches of the Riviera Maya. The 5-hour tour (including transportation time to the destination) includes equipment, instruction, the services of a tour guide, lunch, and bottled water; it departs daily at 8am, 10:30am, and 1:30pm. The company picks you up at the Plaza Kukulcán.
