Apple Vacations Online Quotes & Availability Pleasant Holidays Online Quotes & Availability “Go early in the morning!” Ixtapa Island (Isla Ixtapa)We've been to Isla Ixtapa 3 times now - the most recent just a couple weeks ago (Jan 2008). We go primarily for the snorkeling at Playa Coral. The fish are large and plentiful but you have to be there early (before 10 AM) while the water is still crystal clear. By afternoon so many people have churned up the water that visibility is nearly zero. There is also some good beachcombing - interesting driftwood and rocks - if you walk past the beach (to the right as you face the water on Playa Coral) around to the point. We've always had good food there but it is a bit more expensive than one would pay at a beach restaurant on the mainland. More annoying, we did have the experience that someone else mentioned in an earlier review - a 15% "service fee" was already added onto the bill but then the waiter claimed an additional 10 pesos above that. It's not the extra $1, but rather the negative feeling it left us with. This may be a new 'trick" because it had never occurred on our previous visits and on this trip we encountered the same thing at 2 other beach restaurants in the Zihuatanejo area.
If you are a snorkeler, I'd recommend Isla Ixtapa as an early morning trip. Get in a couple of hours of snorkeling, then head back to the mainland for lunch. “Good place to relax” My husband and I spent an afternoon at Isla Ixtapa in Nov 2007. There are two swim beaches and a snorkeling beach. The waves were starting to pick up at the snorkeling beach, which faces the Pacific so we did not snorkel.
The swim beaches are very small, good for children and perfect for a dip to cool off.
We sat at the restaurant 7 Mares, because I had seen it in the Ixtapa/Zihau forums. The service there was great! The owner came out to greet us personally and brought us each a drink on the house.
Every restaurant will try to get you to sit at their tables. Take a look at the menu...a lunch entree for around 70 to 90 pesos and beer for 20 pesos is reasonable. Some will have 2 for 1 drinks from noon to 5:00pm.
The beach vendors selling necklaces and such will usually go away after a polite "Gracias, no." Others will start spreading their wares out on your table and require a firmer "nada" before they leave you alone.
There are two piers to the main beach on the left and a smaller beach on the right. The snorkeling beach is on the back side of the island on the right. There is a foot path over the hill connecting the two swim beaches. |
