Sub-tropical to tropical, describes the climate generally. This means that most of the rain falls in the summer months and September, the winters are much drier. Temperatures don't vary greatly from month to month. As in all tropical climates, the higher you go, the cooler it gets, and that is why most year-round retirees live in the central highlands.

Mazatlan is on the fringe of the tropical zone, so it's climate is not quite so predictably tropical.

In the southern portion of the state of Sinaloa, Mazatlan stands out for its celebrated carnival, one of the country’s most important festivals.
