Tijuana Mexico Baja California Vacations

Tijuana International is served by the major Mexican airlines. San Diego International Airport is only a few miles north of the international border and can be used as a transit point for travellers wishing to visit Tijuana.

Tijuana is a city in Baja California Norte, Mexico. It is located right across the border from San Diego, California, USA. Visitors can expect an ideal climate for most of the year, with average temperatures during the daytime ranging from 68ºF in January, to 86º in August. The rainy season is short (and tame, with yearly averages close to only 10 inches of rainfall), and encompasses late Winter to early Spring.

If you're headed to Tijuana for a day or three, I highly recommend spending a few hours at CECUT (Centro Cultural Tijuana), the cultural center of the city located in Zona Rio (a nice area). There are art exhibitions, an OMNIMAX theatre, an archaeological outdoor garden museum, an excellent (no doubt one of the best in the world) permanent exhibition of Baja California history, an indoor restaurant; and periodic lectures and musical and dance performances. Prices are reasonable and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Tours are available for groups, including school groups, which I've arranged several times (I'm a teacher).

Cabs are abundant throughout the city. If you are walking into Tijuana via the San Ysidro border crossing, you will be immediately confronted with a massive array of yellow cabs waiting to take you into downtown. This group of cab drivers are conveniently located, but be sure to negotiate a price before jumping into a cab.

Throughout the city, cab drivers stand on the sidewalks and solicit customers. It is almost impossible to avoid them, so finding a cab should never be a problem. Yellow cabs do not have meters, so agree with your driver in advance what the cost will be. Taxi Libre, white with red stripe, cabs have meters and are cheaper than yellow cabs, though you might have to remind the driver to use the meter.

Tijuana Things to Do

Stay at the Mariott Tijuana, its the nicest hotel there.

Next door is a really nice golf course, Tijuana Country Club.  Easy with its wide long fairways and friendly marshals.  It's a real oasis in the middle of the chaos.   Very friendly and casual, they let 7 guys play through.

There are dog races a few blocks away at a casino called Caliente.  It's owned by Jorge Hank, a prominent politician.  He also likes animals as you can see grizzly bears, llamas and other animals cage at the casino.  Go with caution and try to soak it in.

The Toreo, or bull fights is huge, but only open on Sundays.

Don't drink Sol beer, it's Mexico's Pabsts.   Eat with the locals, its cheap, safe and pretty good.  Bottled Cokes are everywhere which is a nice change from cans.

There's a lot of nightlife, so do your own research depending on what you're looking for.  Make sure you get a price for a cab before going, they seem to jack up late at night.

If you need to get there from the airport, take a cab to downtown ~$10 and then the Metro train.  Its $2.50, comfortable and kinda scenic, with shipyards en- route.  And yes, you can get back on a drivers licence, at least at July 2007.
